The Inaugural Class: A Profile of Our New Students

After a very competitive admissions process, the Master of Science in Analytics program was pleased to welcome 31 new entrants. All were excellent candidates who displayed prowess in quantitative methods, and who also demonstrated a passion for the field of analytics.

We are pleased to invite these students from numerous peer institutions that include the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern University (three students from our very own Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences Department), University of California - Berkeley, University of California- San Diego, University of California - Irvine, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, University of Wisconsin- Madison, and the University of Minnesota.

These students also come from various academic backgrounds. The most common majors represented in our class include Mathematics and Economics, but we also had a fairly large representation from Industrial and/or Operations Engineering, Management Science, and Computer Science. Other majors accepted include  Computational Finance, Chemical Engineering, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Insurance, Statistics, Psychology (marketing focus), and Business Administration. Seven of our students even have higher degrees.

Our students also possess a range of work experience. Over 1/3 of our incoming students have no formal work experience. Meanwhile, about 1/3 of students arrive with consulting and professional services, 6% have engineering experience, 22% have information technology experience, and 6% have taught in academia.
